Louisiana State Representative Richard Nelson has become the first candidate to drop out of the governor’s race and has endorsed current Attorney General and Republican frontrunner Jeff Landry for the job. At 37-years-old Nelson was the youngest and the only millennial candidate in the race and built a campaign focused around the elimination of the State income tax.

According to The Shreveport Times, Nelson, though an active campaigner was unable to raise enough money to be competitive against more experienced and connected fundraisers in the long run up to election day. The outlet reported that Nelson also trailed consistently in the polls, something AGR has noted in past reports.

Posting to X, formerly Twitter Nelson wrote, “Today, I am withdrawing from the #lagov race, and endorsing @JeffLandry I am proud of the impact we've made on this race, and thankful for my supporters and especially my family for the sacrifices they've made. My heart will always be committed to Louisiana, and that is why I am happy to support @JeffLandry to be our next Governor. I believe that Jeff has the commitment and the courage to bring the fundamental reforms we need in state government. Our people need good jobs, good schools, and good health, and Jeff is the best candidate for the job.”

In his official statement he wrote, “I ran for governor to improve the lives of the people of Louisiana, and we have been fortunate to travel to every corner of the state spreading the gospel of good government," Nelson said in a statement. "While this was always going to be a difficult race, I am proud of the impact we made with the resources we had. I want to thank my supporters and especially my family for the sacrifices they have made on this journey.
